The gold kawakawa leaf adorning her neck forms the shape of a heart, symbolising healing, protection, and the enduring strength found in aroha itself. Through her gaze, “Aroha” invites viewers into a deeper reflection on identity, vulnerability, and the power of compassion within community.

Created shortly after “Erina,” the work marked an important stage in Josh’s rediscovery of illustration and mixed media. Inspired in part by his own past and personal expression, elements such as her dreadlocks became a subtle reflection of identity woven into the piece.
