Inspired by the diversity within Josh Kiwikiwi’s own whānau and friendships, the piece reflects the journey of reconnecting to culture, embracing whakapapa, and finding strength within both heritage and lived experience. Through her presence, “Erina” embodies resilience, identity, and the beauty found in cultural connectedness.

Originally sketched during a quiet moment while working in retail, the piece became the catalyst for Josh’s exploration into illustration and mixed media, ultimately leading to the creation of The Wāhine in Gold Series.
