"Erina" - The first illustration of "The Wāhine In Gold Series"

"Erina" is a striking embodiment of wāhine in today's society, representing those with mixed cultural backgrounds. Inspired by the diverse tapestry of my extended whānau and the friendships that have enriched my life, "Erina" captures the journey of those grappling with their identities amid two cultures. Through her portrayal, we witness the strength and resilience forged in the bonds and similarities between these rich heritages, celebrating the quest to reclaim and honour one's cultural roots.

When I first created "Erina," I was working in retail, counting down the last few hours of my shift. Feeling bored, I decided to start drawing. I took the piece of paper home, and that night, she came alive. This sparked my quest to enhance my skills in illustration and mixed media, ultimately leading to the birth of the "Wāhine in Gold Series."
