It was important for me to acknowledge both Puanga and The Tautoru Constellation (Orions belt)in this design. I was told that the constellation as a whole looks like a bird sitting on a branch (or snare) trying to eat Puanga. The name Puanga means Blossoming seeds and the Tautoru constellation is a bird snare to catch the Kererū often fat, drunk, and easy to catch at this time of year. Rather than depicting a snare i wished to showcase the Miro tree and berries of which the Kererū loves to eat.
It is important to acknowledge Puanga just as much as Matariki as both are a sign of the beginning of winter and the Māori new Year. For me it is easier to find Puanga, as i like to visualise a Kereū in a tree and look across to the left to find matariki.
This open edition print honours the Iwi (tribes) and Hapū (sub-tribes) who look to Puanga as the end of the harvest and reflect the year that has passed and celebrate the new.
This design is offered as an Open Edition Fine Art Print in A4 & A3 sizes as well as on the Cricut app.
