“Omari” is a celebration of cross-cultural connectedness, representing Josh’s cousin, who is Dominican, British & Māori decent. She embodies the experiences of wāhine Māori who may not fit traditional expectations, challenging expectations and stereotypes of appearance, reminding us that identity can manifest in diverse forms. A Phrase often used to describe the change of the world both within and outside of Te ao Māori is: “Te ao Hurihuri” translates to “ever changing world”.

In this piece, the kawakawa leaves symbolize the knowledge te ao marama (the natural world), passed down from our tūpuna, rather than mourning leaves. Beneath her, the huia pays homage to her Taranaki roots and serves as a reminder of the natural treasures that have been lost to time—treasures we strive to protect and honour as taonga, through both stories and song.

Her Garment is simple yet is styled in the Spanish-esk dresses worn in Dominica with a woven Pacifica twist. Using a simple Taniko for me this symbolises and makes reference to the many travels and places between two very separated island nations.

Omari’s presence invites reflection on the complexities of identity and the importance of self-acceptance. By embracing her unique heritage, she challenges perceptions and encourages a broader understanding of what it means to be a wahine Māori.

The creation of “Omari” draws from my admiration for those who navigate multiple identities, underscoring my commitment to celebrating their stories and the connections they embody.
