“Ko Omari tōku Ingoa” - The ninth illustration of “The Wāhine in gold series”
“Omari” is a celebration of cross cultural connectedness, representing the experiences of wāhine Māori whose identities exist across multiple cultures and histories. Inspired by Josh Kiwikiwi’s cousin of Dominican, British, and Māori descent, the work challenges traditional expectations of appearance and identity, reflecting the reality of an ever changing world, “Te Ao Hurihuri.”
Kawakawa leaves throughout the piece symbolise ancestral knowledge and connection to te ao mārama, while the huia beneath her honours her whakapapa to Taranaki and serves as a reminder of treasured taonga lost through time. Her garment draws inspiration from Dominican dress combined with woven Pacific influences, symbolising the journeys and connections between distant island nations.
Through her presence, “Omari” invites reflection on identity, belonging, and self acceptance, encouraging a broader understanding of what it means to be wāhine Māori in the contemporary world.
