“Ko Shani Tōku Ingoa” - The sixth illustration of "The Wāhine in Gold Series"
“Ko Shani Tōku Ingoa” is a deeply personal tribute within the series, honoring my tuāhina (older sister). She is a daughter, mother, and a resilient, proud wahine in our whānau, reflecting the essence of all wāhine Māori who hold a special place in their families.
In this piece, I aimed to capture her steadfastness, likening her to a maunga (mountain), which is why her korowai is rendered in solid gold. The shape draws inspiration from Gottfried Lindauer’s portrayal of our tūpuna, Sophia Hinerangi of Ngāti Rongonui, creating a powerful connection to our whakapapa, with a modern twist. This lineage is further emphasized by the four Huia feathers atop her head, symbolizing her status within our family. The pattern within the ring behind her represents her role as the oldest sister.
Creating “Ko Shani Tōku Ingoa” was a heartfelt process, rooted in my admiration for her unwavering support and love. While this is a deeply personal piece, it also serves to honor and share the strength of all wāhine Māori, celebrating their influence and resilience across generations.
