Ko Shani Tōku Ingoa - The sixth illustration of the Wāhine in Gold Series.
Ko Shani Tōku Ingoa is a deeply personal tribute honouring Josh Kiwikiwi’s tuahine, celebrating her strength, resilience, and unwavering presence within their whānau. As a daughter, mother, and proud wāhine Māori, she reflects the mana carried by many wāhine who hold central roles within their families and communities.
Her korowai is rendered in solid gold, symbolising steadfastness and strength, likening her presence to that of a maunga. Inspired by Gottfried Lindauer’s portraiture of tūpuna, particularly Sophia Hinerangi of Ngāti Rongomai, the work creates a connection between ancestral portraiture and contemporary Māori identity.
The huia feathers and surrounding patterns further honour whakapapa, leadership, and her role as the eldest sister within the whānau. While deeply personal, the piece stands as a tribute to the enduring influence, protection, and resilience of wāhine Māori across generations.
