“Kura” - The third illustration of “The Wāhine in Gold Series”

“Kura” serves as symbol of our young wāhine navigating the complexities of the modern world while honoring the wisdom of their ancestors.

This piece captures the essence of those who forge their own paths, blending contemporary experiences with the rich teachings passed down through generations. 

The mantle of this journey can be embraced at any stage of life, as we are all young at heart, especially when learning something new or reclaiming one’s culture. 

When I began this piece, I reached out to a dear friend named Kura, who resembles my tuāhine (older sister) in this depiction. Maybe because I viewed her as my older sister during our studies together. I asked if I could use her as a model. The photo I chose highlighted her beautiful Balinese-inspired chest tattoo alongside a moko Kauae. This for me embodied the modern wāhine who proudly wear their culture and identity, whilst celebrating their journeys, travels and experiences at the same time.
