Tokotoru ngā tamariki
Original painting by Josh Kiwikiwi
Acrylic mixed media, pigment sticks and fold leaf on stretched canvas
500x700mm (framed)
Tokotoru Ngā Tamariki speaks to unity, whakapapa, and the bonds that move through generations. Three youthful figures stride forward with a quiet rhythm - distinct in form, yet moving as one. Their form, colours, patterns, and markings flow between them, echoing the balance of individuality and shared strength. Behind them the pattern ripples with energy, reinforcing resilience, aroha, and kotahitanga.
The three tamariki represent the next generation of tūpuna, yet in their stride we also recognise the familiar silhouettes of our nannies, kuia, our aunties, our sisters and mothers - echoes of those who came before. They remind us that our ancestors are not memory alone; they move within us, shaping the way we walk, the way we see, and the way we become.
Tokotoru ngā Tamariki is a celebration of continuity, of the stories that repeat, evolve, and live on through our descendants. It reminds us that whakapapa is not only inherited; it is enacted, carried, and breathed into life with every step forward.
This painting now lives in its forever home in Qatar.
