“Taira-Heiria” - The seventh illustration of "The Wāhine in Gold Series"

“Taira Heiria” embodies mana wāhine, honouring mothers, knowledge holders, practitioners, and leaders as the pillars and life givers of whakapapa. Her presence reflects the strength, wisdom, and dignity carried by wāhine Māori, acknowledging the equal standing wāhine have always held alongside tāne within te ao Māori.

The work celebrates women who lead with courage and grace while nurturing their whānau, hapū, and iwi. Through her expression and adornment, “Taira Heiria” represents resilience, achievement, and the enduring mana passed through generations.

Inspired by moko artist Tyler Jade, whose work reconnects people to their whakapapa through the practice of tā moko, the piece was created as a bold and chiefly portrayal of mana wāhine. Her kaitaka styled korowai and intricate tāniko patterns further symbolise prestige, leadership, and honour.
